The last year or two going for walks has become more and more difficult. As someone who thrives from natural experiences, this is pretty sad for me. Between Baker aging and not being able to be left at home alone at all anymore (and also not being able to go out without his buggy) and my physical health meaning I can no longer walk very far at all, finding time to get out and also sourcing locations that are wheelchair friendly makes everything a stress. Not what you want from a relaxing walk.
So when my parents were down visiting able to look after Baker, we looked into some accessible (ha!) nature walks and decided on Ladyburn Lake, near Druridge Bay. When it comes to wheelchair accessibility I have personally found it rare to find somewhere that actually is - including indoor spaces/businesses.
(Mr H took me to the pharmacy to pick up a prescription the other week and on the NHS website this pharmacy was labled 'wheelchair accessable'...we got there to a huge step, no ramp, no button to call for assistance and no staff member in sight. Luckily he could go in for me, but not everyone has that luxury.)
Anyway, we walked and rolled as far as we could on our little stroll around Ladyburn Lake and then doubled back to the car park when we reached an access dead end which made for a shorter day out than expected. With our extra time out we called by a local pub for a quick drink before heading home. I'm so glad we did because there was a Rookery in the trees nextdoor and I LOVE Rooks!

I sometimes feel unworthy of discussing such things seeing as I'm an ambulatory wheelchair user but from my experiences over the past few years I'm appauled at how closed off the world in general is to all disabled people.
