Tor of Craigoch

The shortest of all the posts from this series and the very last - eventually! If you have read the other posts from this trip, you'll be well aware that this was the camping holiday that we took Baker (the dog) on for his 10th birthday last August. Since then we have returned to the same campsite for another parent-dog quality time trip this past June, so I am very happy to finally be getting this post published.

Featured here is 'Tor of Craigoch' The Agnew Monument which was actually only a couple of minutes down the road from where we stayed. We stopped by after a long day out to read about it and take a few quick photos but unfortunately didn't get to do the walk up to the tower itself as we had an old doggo with sore legs and it was very hot!

That being said I do only have a couple of photos but as I hadn't inserted them into any of the other posts from this holiday I did still want to share them.

The other blog posts in this series can be found here:

Scottish Places.info describes this monument as: 'A three-stage tower topped by a corbelled-out parapet within the ancient hill-fort on the summit of the Tor of Craigoch in the North Rhins of Galloway'.

The Agnew Monument was built in 1850 in memory of Sir Andrew Agnew of Lochnaw Castle. He was 7th Baronet of Lochnaw and had served as Wigtownshire MP from 1856 to 1868.

Had we taken the wander up the footpath to the tower we'd have gotten to cross over the collapsed walls of the Iron Age hillfort. As stated on Visit Scotland, 'These walls are now reduced to a spread of stones hidden in the gorse and beautiful rhododendrons but they once formed two massive ramparts encircling the hill. The view across Loch Ryan is magnificent and shows the strategic and defensive importance of the site.' And now I feel like we really missed out haha!

Anyway, a really cool ending to the trip and these posts.
Now to get started on writing up this year's holiday...but before then I have some photos to share from our Aniversary minibreak from October 2022 too! Ahh!

Until next time...
