A Winter's Walk to St Mary's Nature Reserve

I hadn't planned to share photos from this day on my blog, but there were a few cool birds spotted and so I thought I'd pop them up here after all.
On the 17th of January we decided to pop through the tunnel and take Baker for a walk at Whitley Bay. Growing up in Blyth, he spent a lot of time in Blyth, Seaton Sluice and Whitley Bay but at 10 years old he hadn't been for a good few years. Mr H doesn't think he'd ever visited Whitley Bay either, so with it being winter and therefore likely to be quieter we headed over.

It was perfect winter weather and it was a surprise to see some birds I'd never photographed before...

Some of the fab birds we saw included Black Headed Gull, Redshank, Lapwing, Grey Heron, Gadwall Duck, Mallard, Coot, and Greylag Goose. The Exmoor Ponies were also there hard at work!

Overall it was a successful walk and a lovely day with my two boys!
Until next time...

Bruce's Stone, Loch Trool

Throwing back to August 2022 and our little camping trip to Dumfries and Galloway for Baker's 10th Birthday!
I've put off editing these photos for far too long and we had such a wonderful time I want to share them sooner rather than later...especially as I also have all of the photos from our Anniversary stay in a Hobbit Hole to share too.

This first post in the mini-series of our holiday is of Bruce's Stone at Loch Trool.
The stone was unveiled in June 1929 to commemorate Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland, and the Battle of Trool in 1307.
Being in August, it was a very hot day and we had Baker with us so didn't get to explore more around the loch yet wanted to see Bruce's Stone so paid a quick flying visit on our way to our campsite near Stranraer. Unfortunately, there was also a man with an off-lead dog who was wandering around itself so I'm gutted I wasn't able to get a photo of Baker with the stone. Perhaps we'll get to go back one day.
Here are a few snaps with lots more from that trip to follow!

What We Ate This Veganuary // Week 3

Veganuary - try vegan in January. It's that simple. Obviously, we are already vegan but I enjoy sharing vegan food ideas on this blog and it gives me an excuse to shout about veganism to everyone even more.
I don't know how long I've been vegan. Many people seem to know the exact date they made the change, however for me, it was quite gradual. I grew up eating chicken, bacon, cheddar cheese and chocolate. I went vegetarian around 2014 and in the following few years phased out milk and butter to vegan alternatives and then eventually the same happened with cheese (which was mainly only eaten on pizza anyway). Finally, after moving in with Mr H we both made the decision to finally bite the bullet and I cut out chocolate. Of course, there have been odd moments where chocolate or ice cream or a normal cheese pizza was consumed - no one is perfect - but I guess you could say I've been vegan for around 4 years.

I'm also neurodivergent and grew up an extremely picky eater. Though I have gotten much better in the past 4 years (half due to veganism, the other half due to being married to a chef), I still find meal ideas and vegan recipes to be overly complicated or just downright gross. You don't have to live on tofu, chickpeas, mushrooms and cauliflower FYI!!

Anyway, just as we did in 2021 we're going to share what we eat during Veganuary this year.
I'll only be sharing our joint evening meal as it is the main food of the day. It's nothing special and a good representation of our actual daily diets - hopefully, it will inspire you to try vegan when you see how easy and yummy it is!

Click here to see what we ate last week!

Day 15 - Nuggets and Chips
A proper lazy tea to kick off the week! Nuggets, chips and beans.

Day 16 - Homemade Pizza
As you'll probably be able to tell, pizza is a favorite in our house and without sounding big-headed, my own homemade broccoli pizza is my favorite!

Day 17 - Burger and Pops
It's turning out to be a particularly unhealthy week it would seem...
Quorn hot and spicy burger, potato pops and broccoli!

Day 18 - Kiev, Potatoes and Veg
Found a new vegan 'chicken' kiev in Asda while looking at new Veganuary lines!
Had it with nice 'tatoes, broccoli and peas.

Day 19 - Mash and Veg
Can't really get more basic than mashed potatoes, broccoli, sprouts, peas and gravy!

Day 20 - Quesadillas
Quesadillas made with soy pieces with mushy peas and pan-fried potato strips.

Day 21 - Curry
It's technically curry, but also not really.
A smooth curry sauce with rice and homemade garlic naan bread.

-----

I'm just going to repeat exactly what I said last week - These may not be the healthiest nor the most diverse nor what you may deem appealing meals, however, these are realistic, easy meals that we actually eat in our house. It's January, therefore cold and comforting, warming meals is what we want. In the warmer weather, we do eat salads and the like but right now this is what we're eating.

Until sitting down to actually put together those little lists above I had no idea that I'd a) had so many 5 stars, and b) read so many new releases! I only read for pleasure and I rarely force myself to read anything - I can remember DNFing one book about 2 chapters in last year and it went to the charity shop so its rare that anything I do finish ends up being less than 3 stars. I also find myself quite picky when giving out 5 stars and they go to exceptional books only so those that got 4 are still absolutely amazing!
The majority of my reading, as you'll be able to tell, consists of middle-grade, books meant for children and through a quick count I can only spot 4 that don't fit into this category. To me reading is an escape, I want to read about magical lands and mystical adventures, about talking animals and unique people, not depressing, serious adult topics and there are so many fabulous children's authors out there that I will continue that for the rest of my life!

*To choose a top 5 was very difficult and they of course are in no particular order!

There we have it, 2022 in books! Though I beat my goal of 35 and even surpassed what I read the previous year (even if only by 1), my shelves are still full of books I can't wait to get around to. I continue to read every single night in bed, but hope that this year I can try and carve out extra time during most days to read also. I do have quite a few larger books on my 2023 TBR so I have lowered my goal to 21...giving me a fortnight per book so I can prioritize tackling those over 500 pages.
I'm excited to fall into the pages of all these other worlds and as of today I'm already 4 awesome books into my reading year.

Previous Years Goal vs Actual Amount Read.
2022 goal 35 - actual 55.
2021 goal 52 - actual 54.
2020 goal 36 - actual 62.
2019 goal 19 - actual 27.
2018 goal 26 - actual 31.
2017 goal 10 - actual 43.

Cats I Loved in August

As of last October, I have been with my Cats Protection Adoption Centre as a Desensitization Volunteer for a whole year! I originally applied to volunteer in 2019, had my phone interviews etc and had a meeting booked to go into the centre in February 2020 but of course that was the year that time stood still. I was re-contacted in September 2021 and although I hadn't left my house for over a year and a half at that point, I pushed myself to do this because it was such a special opportunity. Once a week I pop in to spend time with beautiful fur babies, hugging those that want to be hugged, playing with those who want to play and just sitting with those who may be afraid or are timid to help 'desensitize' them and give them company. The latter are the ones I do this for most and get such satisfaction seeing the difference in some cats over time.
While there I always take photos and videos, some of which are used on social media to help spotlight any cats who may have been overlooked or have waited longer than others for their furrever homes. However, of course, these photos also feature in my daily photos - I'm almost done with year 10 now - and so I thought it would be nice for me to look back on and remember every cat I've had the pleasure of meeting by sharing them here too. I am aware it is in fact January and these photos are from August. I decided to post them on a 6-month delay. Here are the cats I loved in August.

(This week was my final goodbye to my buddies Ronnie and Miles before they left to start their retirement in their new home. Obviously, I adore every single cat, but now and again there are those who completely steal your heart and I wish I'd been able to have these absolute joys join my family.)

-----

I tell each and every cat ' I love you' when I leave and my heart always breaks to close the door behind me whether they are sitting cosy in their hide or clawing and meowing at the glass. This volunteer placement has become a huge part of my life and part of my weekly routine. I can't wait to continue my journey with Cats Protection and urge you to check out your local centre!

Pop on over to Cats Protection | UK’s Largest Cat Welfare Charity to find the centre closest to you. Donate, shop online, buy from the centres' Amazon wishlist and most importantly ADOPT DON'T SHOP!!! Oh, and spay and neuter you're bloomin' pets. Rescue centres all over the country are really struggling right now and they all need your support. Thanks!
